What is coaching?
As a coach, I help you examine your situation, explore options and goals, research resources, and develop an action plan. Coaching is not therapy or counseling! It is usually a more brief service and helps you find your own answers to current dilemmas, make choices, and take actions to achieve specific life or career goals.
For example, perhaps you dream of returning to school but don't think it's possible. Or perhaps you are unhappy with your job and want to change careers. I will help you locate resources, decide on a new career or make a college plan, take action steps, and make sure you have a follow up support system before continuing on your own.
Sometimes people feel alone and isolated during times of transition. I also offer less expensive group services that can help you build your support system and share ideas and encouragement with other folks in similar circumstances. Together, we help each group member take concrete steps towards their dreams and goals.
People are capable of amazing changes, both alone and in groups. You have the answers! You are very capable of learning new skills. My job is to help you find those answers, practice your skills, and move forward with confidence. It's also my job to help you develop a community-based network of support. We all need each other! It's a privilege to be coach or midwife, as you take actions to create the life of which you dream. It's also a joy to help build community. I look forward to working with you!

"Cynthia worked with me through so many ups and downs as I evaluated my academic career, returned to school, and applied for scholarships. I never would have won the Ford Scholarship, which is paying my way to a bachelor's degree, if she had not continued to nudge and encourage me. She's practical, kind and honest, the best coach I ever had! " 34 year old African American single mom, currently working on her bachelor's degree
"When I started working with Cynthia, I was going through a divorce, depressed and confused. Within a couple months of taking her classes and meeting with her, I was smiling! She helped me recognize my strengths, research careers, and make new friends. She helped me learn to believe in myself. I will soon graduate from nursing school." 36 year old Caucasian single mom with 3 kids, divorcing and relocated from Connecticut
Ms. Dettman helped me by treating me as an individual, not just another student. She truly sees that each individual has great strengths and helps them see how they can contribute to society. I learned a lot more in her class than I had expected. Before the class, I was changing my mind every day about my career. Now I have a career path, interior design, and I feel confident. We need alot more people like her teaching: people who really care about helping all their students. 19 year old young man, community college student.
